This Privacy Policy explains how Hanzi Habit ("we", "us", or "our") handles information when you use our Android education app. Hanzi Habit is designed to work offline and to keep your study data on your device.
1. Summary
- We do not require an account.
- We do not collect, sell, or share your personal information with us.
- We do not use advertising SDKs or analytics SDKs.
- We do not request sensitive Android permissions such as camera, location, contacts, storage, microphone, or internet access.
- Your learning progress is stored locally on your device.
2. Information We Do Not Collect
We do not collect, transmit to our servers, or sell any of the following because the app has no account system and no developer-operated backend:
- Name, email address, phone number, or postal address
- User IDs, login credentials, or social media profiles
- Precise location or coarse location
- Photos, videos, audio recordings, or files from your device
- Contacts, messages, or call logs
- Advertising ID or cross-app tracking data
- Payment information
The app does not send your study activity to us.
3. Information Stored Locally on Your Device
To provide app features, Hanzi Habit stores data only on your device using local storage technologies such as Room database and DataStore preferences. This may include:
- Learning progress: learned flags, favorites, and last viewed timestamps for characters
- Daily study data: which character is assigned for each date
- Quiz history: quiz scores, totals, and timestamps
- Study activity history: local activity events used for progress and history screens
- Streak information: current streak, longest streak, and last active date
- App settings: onboarding completion, theme preference, text size preference, and audio autoplay preference
- Bundled learning content: the character catalog included with the app
This information is used only to operate app features such as daily lessons, flashcards, quizzes, browsing, progress tracking, and settings.
We do not receive this locally stored information unless you choose to contact us directly.
4. Android Permissions
Hanzi Habit does not declare sensitive user-facing Android permissions in its app manifest, including but not limited to:
- INTERNET
- ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE
- CAMERA
- READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE / WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE
- MANAGE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE
- ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION / ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION
- RECORD_AUDIO
- READ_CONTACTS
- POST_NOTIFICATIONS
- QUERY_ALL_PACKAGES
The app may include standard Android library components added automatically by AndroidX. These are used for normal app operation and do not give us access to your personal information.
5. Offline Operation
Hanzi Habit is designed to work without internet access after installation.
The privacy policy screen inside the app loads a local HTML file from the app package
(file:///android_asset/legal/privacy_policy.html) and does not require network access.
6. Data Sharing
We do not share, sell, rent, or trade your information with third parties for advertising or marketing purposes.
We do not use third-party analytics, advertising, crash reporting, or social login SDKs in the app.
7. Android Backup and Device Transfer
Android backup and device-to-device transfer may be enabled in the app configuration. If you use Android backup or device transfer features provided by your device or Google account, your local app data may be included in backups or transfers managed by your operating system. We do not control those platform backup services, and that data is not sent to us as the app developer.
You can manage backup behavior through your device settings.
8. Data Retention and Deletion
You can delete your app data in the following ways:
- Reset progress: use Settings > Reset progress inside the app to clear learned flags, favorites, quiz history, streak data, and daily assignments. Bundled characters remain available.
- Uninstall the app: removing the app from your device deletes local app data stored in the app sandbox, subject to your device backup settings.
9. Children's Privacy
Hanzi Habit is a general education app for learning Chinese characters. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children or adults because the app does not collect personal information through our systems. If you believe information has been provided to us in error, please contact us using the email below.
10. Security
Because your study data remains on your device and is not transmitted to our servers, protection of your device, screen lock, and backup settings are important to keeping your information secure.
11. International Users
Hanzi Habit is provided as a local offline app. Since we do not collect personal information through the app, there is no cross-border transfer of your personal information to us.
12. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, provide the updated policy in the app. Continued use of the app after an update means you accept the revised policy.
